Fish emulsion for the garden
Does anyone here use fish emulsion? I've heard very good things about it and was wondering if any one would chime in. I guess I'll have to do my own homework as far as where to buy it over the net. It seems to be unobtainable at any stores around me.
I'm told by some that a teaspoonfull per 5 gallon bucket of water will make extroardinary differences in growth and yeild of the garden plants. I'm ready to give it a try. Damn manure tea gets a little messy. |

NAH if you do that the coons and possums will get them before the plants do, AuAgGal. Throw the guts in a barrel and let them stew to a liquid.

Re: Fish emulsion for the garden
When I was a kid, every Summer one of my jobs was to haul seaweed and a tub of fish we got from the bay at the Cabin and put over my Gram's garden.
Boy did that garden produce. Every year til up the soil, lay in the fish and seaweed. |
Re: Fish emulsion for the garden
I started my plants inside a little too early. I gave them some fish emulsion and it stunted my tomatoes, all the tops got curly and stopped growing.
They were about 16inches tall when I gave it to them. I only mixed one capful to a gallon of water. http://cache.planetnatural.com/plane...tilzer-lrg.jpg I found out later that when you have plants under lights you should only give about 1/2 of the dosage. Had to toss about 8 - once beautiful tomato plants! I used this kelp and it did not burn my veggies. I got it from Planet Natural. http://cache.planetnatural.com/plane...iquid-kelp.jpg You can also get sea kelp granules and spread over your beds. Or go to the feed store and get alfalfa pellets ( seed free) and sprinkle them on the dirt and when you water they will break down and give nutrients to your plants. I have not tried the fish emulsion now that the plants are in the garden. Almost afraid to! |
Re: Fish emulsion for the garden
I have had very good success with fish emulsion that I Purchased at Home Depot. I sometimes would mix several times more per gallon then recommended and never had it hurt my plants, although they were planted in the ground. I could tell they had enough when the leaves got really dark green or had a hint of purple in them. I'll see if I can dig up a pic or two of my tomato plants when I get home.

Re: Fish emulsion for the garden
I've used Alaska Fish Fertilizer, 5-1-1 for at least 7-8 seasons with good results. Purchased at Wmart or Slowes.
Its my understanding application is about foliar feeding early in the morning before full sun... is beneficial. The leaf's stomata is still open and ready to absorb the nutrients. Also I apply to the base of the plant thru the season. Read and follow the instructions carefully for best results. I like and understand the "bury fishhead and guts idea" just go deep. Guts and heads in a barrel/bucket.. WHOOOOWEEE. The commercial stuff has been deorderized, never the less it's still got some "whiff" to it. Good luck and I hope your garden is productive. |
Re: Fish emulsion for the garden
Give these guys a call. They sell some kind of fish fertilizer in 300 gallon totes.

Re: Fish emulsion for the garden
I found some fish emulsion at Wmart. They didn't even know they had it. It was pretty cheap, comparable to what I found it for online and no shipping.
Thanks for the info TonyG. I will have to check that site out. They have lots of stuff. |
